This report may also show phrases that include your brand name and show how your brand name is ranking on google. Skip these phrases also. Search engine optimization is about ranking and getting traffic from non-branded phrases which are not used by you in your blogpost.

#5. Confirm your rankings by analyzing your website results on the google analytics:

Start searching for the phrases in the Google search engine to confirm your website rankings on google. Now you’ll notice that the “average position” really isn’t the same as rankings of your website on the google SERP. Sometimes, you’ll see your website ranking higher than the report suggests your website ranking on the google. Other times, you won’t see your site ranks at that position at all. So don't get frustrated or confused about it.

There are a lot of reasons for the discrepancies which you can see after reading the reports and actually searching the phrases on google SERP.

1. Your site may have more than one page that ranks for the phrase on the Google SERP.

2. Your site may rank in image search results rather than textual.

3. Your site may rank differently today than the average ranking across the date range in the report you have seen in the analytics.

4. Your search results may be personalized for you based on your location, browsing history, etc.

#6. Check to see how the phrase is used on the your article for google SERP.

Now, the job is to see how well the article is optimized for the phrase that is ranking on Goggle SERP. Does the phrase appear on the article in the right places to be seen in the SERP? Was the article indicating relevance about the phrases?

It’s possible that the phrase hardly appeared on the article at all which means phrases are not used in the whole article. It’s possible the ranking was completely accidental without using the phrase and the search result shows your website at the top.

If so, you now have an opportunity to indicate the relevance and improve the rankings with very little effort just by inserting those phrases at the right place.

Here is how to check that whether that phrase exists in the article or not:

While viewing the page, search for the phrase (using control+F) just like you are doing search in Word document.

i. Does the phrase appear on the page?

ii. Does it appear all together, or is it broken up?

iii. Where does it appear? In the title, header and body text?

iv. How many times is it used in each location?

If the phrase isn’t in the title of the article, header and body text of the article, then this article wasn’t really optimized for getting organic traffic. Then it is clear that Google rankings were accidental and you are receiving traffic purely by luck.

Alert!!  Before you proceed for optimizing your page, check to make sure that this page isn’t already ranking for other phrases. It’s possible to indicate the relevance for one phrase and hurt the relevance for another phrase in the same page.

To make sure you don’t de-optimize it, go back to your Queries report and look for other phrases the page might rank for those other phrases. Search for these phrases in Google, google keyword planner, ubersuggest, Href, SEMrush or other tools. This will tell you all the phrases the page ranks for and how high your page ranks for a particular phrases.

If the article already ranks for another phrase, check the volume of that particular phrase in the Google Keyword Planner. Is the phrase more popular and is more searchable? Is it a more relevant phrase that may bring more targeted traffic on your website if places at good place?

If either answer is yes, then do not take these phrase as otherwise. Go back to the beginning and start again, or proceed to the next step using the better phrase because it is better to work for new phrases than to de-rank the existing phrases.
